In an assisted living residence, household chores that once tied your loved one down are now taken care of. This includes everything from general housekeeping to meal preparation and laundry and linen services.

Assisted living residences provide the atmosphere of a home while taking care of many of the daily tasks required to maintain a household:

Trouble managing household chores is one of the major reasons that seniors give for moving into assisted living residences. In many instances seniors are perfectly capable of these chores, but are ready to give up the obligation to make more time for hobbies and interests.

In assisted living residences, staff members take care of the general housekeeping, tidying up and usually cleaning the apartment or room once a week.

Meal Preparation

Having nutritious, healthy food provided is a major plus for the residents of assisted living residences. At least two, and generally three meals a day are provided, along with snacks, and many residences are equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes that would allow your loved one to prepare his or her own meals as desired.

Most residences can accommodate special dietary requests, such as providing vegetarian or vegan meals, kosher or halal meals, or ensuring that residents with hypertension are adhering to low-salt diets.

  • Laundry and Linen

In an assisted living residence, your loved one would be free from having to keep up with laundry. This onerous chore is often neglected among seniors who suffer from mobility issues. In an assisted living residence, laundry and linens are washed, generally once a week.

Physical and Mental Activities

In an assisted living residence, a full range of recreational activities will be made available to your loved one. Mental stimulation is provided as much as possible to keep minds sharp. From games such as bingo to poetry writing workshops, assisted living residences typically offer a range of activities to suit any interest and that are designed to stimulate the mind. For seniors who have been living alone and feeling isolated, this can greatly improve mental acuity and positive mental outlook.

Physical activity is also emphasized through group sessions in everything from chair exercises to palates classes designed to improve mobility and improve health, no matter the level of physical ability.

Basic Transportation

If your loved one is no longer able to drive, or simply would prefer not to, transportation is no longer an issue. Assisted living residences are equipped with vans that routinely take residents to the doctor or wherever else they need to go.

Many residences are located at the heart of centers of culture and commerce, or near bus routes. In all cases, options for basic transportation will be provided, allowing your loved one to come and go as they so desire.

The provision of a safe environment is another aspect of assisted living that is prized by many seniors. Security is 24/7, so break-ins and robberies are much less likely to happen in an assisted living residence.

Most apartments or rooms have emergency call systems, so that resident can call for help in case of an emergency, and staff members are available to take care of needs as they arise.

Information and Referrals

General information about services available in the local community is always provided.  For instance, there may be referrals to public counseling services, bodywork, or medical specialists. Having referrals on the ready ensures that senior citizens immediately get the specialized services they need when such services aren’t available on-site.
